How do you feel about decorating? Some people have tons of ideas for their home even before they start talking with the contractors or renters. Others have absolutely no idea what they want or what would make their home look great. You have plenty of options when it comes to finding and choosing great décor, and one of the first things that you may want to do is speak with an interior designer, even if only for a professional opinion. They may have some ideas, as they are accustomed to those types of questions. Many will even have an extremely talented decorating team that can provide you with even more insight if you need.
Let’s look at some basic home décor tips many designers suggest, to help get you started on the right path.
First, consider the colors you will be using on the interior. Most of the time, using simple and muted colors, and having just one or two colors in a room could be a good idea. This can take the attention away from actual colors and allow your accessories and furnishings to take center stage.
However, this really depends on the home and the owner. In some cases, you may want to have some colors that are a bit more eccentric and that match your personality. The color option may be something that you want to discuss with your landlord early, unless you’re buying of course. But most rental properties will allow you a certain amount of freedom when it comes to interior color.
Not Too Much Clutter
Look at some images of homes from your favorite home and garden magazines or from online sources like home décor blogs. What do the interiors look like? You don’t have to look at the actual items in the picture and consider them as part of your vision. However, you will want to look at the arrangement of the furniture and fixtures. Most of the time, you’ll find that homes with no clutter simply look cleaner, easier on the eye and better over all. This is something to consider when you are decorating. Prepare separate boxes for the things you need to throw, recycle, keep or give. Have a plan before you start buying pieces, this way you can be assured that everything will fit and mesh well together.
One of the areas where you’ll really want to take your time is in the type of artwork that you choose throughout the house. While professional designers may have a few ideas for you to consider, art is often very personal and an important part of decorating to make your house truly yours. It can also be expensive depending on your taste. This is an area of real investment, so be patient. Thinking long and acting slowly will save you from any future regrets with the purchases you make.
Don’t neglect others who might be living in the home, such as a spouse or children. You should ask them if they have any ideas or input when it comes to decorating. Listen to their suggestions and try to come up with a compromise. Even if your home isn’t built yet, now is the time to start thinking about home décor!
