The smallest of outdoor spaces can still incorporate flowers that will attract hummingbirds and butterflies. A container garden that consists of just one container of flowers can do the trick, providing both plant and wildlife beauty.
Here are three different container garden planting ideas to attract hummingbirds and butterflies to any outdoor space.
Purple flowers are a magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies. This purple planter requires full sun and will make a striking display on a porch or patio.
Start with a 20 inch planting container, good quality potting soil and one each of these four purple flowers: Soprano purple osteospermum, artist purple flossflower, mini rose veined supertonia and icicles licorice plant.
View the planting container as a clock and plant the osteospermum at 2 o’clock, the floss flower at 4 o’clock, the supertonia at 8 o’clock and the licorice plant at 10 o’clock.
As these purple flowering plants grow, they will fill in the container and spill over the sides, attracting hummingbirds and several varieties of butterflies.
Flowers And Foliage Container
This container garden uses contrasting colors, height, textured foliage and flowers to attract hummingbirds and butterflies and will grow well in partial shade.
Add good quality potting soil to a 20 inch container and purchase one each of these plants: Efanthia woodspurge, Big Red Judy coleus and Pesto Perpetou basil. In addition, purchase two Dolce Key Lime Pie coral bells for this container.
Plant the woodspurge in the center of the container, the Big Red Judy coleus at 2 o’clock, the basil at 10 o’clock and the coral bells at 4 and 8 o’clock.
The Dolce Key Lime coral bells in the front of the container provide bright green, low growing foliage with pink flowers. The center planting of woodspurge will grow slightly higher with needle like dark green and red foliage, and the back plantings of coleus and basil will provide the height and contrasting color to the container.
A small 12 inch container garden will still attract a multitude of hummingbirds and butterflies, if the right plants are in the small container. This small fry container garden needs full sun for optimum growth.
Plant one Silver Sage saliva at 3 o’clock, one Angelina sedum at 6 o’clock and one at 12 o’clock and one Tukana White verbena at 9 o’clock in the 12 inch container.
This small fry container garden provides a monochromatic color scheme, textured foliage and delicate white verbena flowers that are guaranteed to attract butterflies and add elegance to even the smallest portion of an outdoor space.
A large garden area is not necessary for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. A one container garden, planted with the right combination of flowers and foliage will be all the invitation the hummingbirds and butterflies need.
